The social media giant has hired Mark Lee and Tom Gunther to join its Superintelligence Labs team. Lee has already started working at Meta, and Gunther will join in the near future, Bloomberg reports .
Gunther left Apple last month, and he and Lee worked closely with Ruoming Pang, the head of Apple's large-scale language modeling team. Lee was known as Pang's first hire at Apple, while Gunther was considered one of the group's most senior employees.
It was recently announced that Meta has brought on two more AI development friends from OpenAI . Jason Wei has been working on OpenAI’s o3 and Deep Research models since 2023. Another, Hyung Won Chung, has worked on several of Wei’s projects, including Deep Research and the o1 model.
Recall that dev.ua reported how Meta is trying to use all available means (including not entirely legal ones) to reduce the gap with OpenAI.
In June, three other OpenAI employees also joined Meta : Lucas Bayer, Alexander Kolesnikov, and Xiaohua Zhai. All of them helped OpenAI set up an office in Zurich.
Also last month, Meta hired Scale AI CEO Alexander Wang after investing $14.3 billion in the AI startup. A month after signing the deal, the startup is laying off hundreds of employees.
Meta also wanted to acquire AI startup Safe Superintelligence and hire its co-founder and former OpenAI chief scientific officer Ilya Sutzkever. After being rejected, it hired its CEO Daniel Gross.
The social media giant also hired former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman.
