As Wired reports , three AI specialists are leaving the new Superintelligence Lab:
“It was a difficult decision not to continue working at the new Superintelligence Lab TBD, especially given the concentration of talent and computing resources,” Agarwal wrote in a post on X, referring to the team at MSL that does cutting-edge AI research. “But after 7.5 years at Google Brain, DeepMind, and Meta, I felt drawn to a different kind of risk.”
Meta is also losing another leader who has been with the company for nearly a decade. Chaya Nayak, Meta’s director of product management for generative AI, is joining OpenAI to work on special projects, two sources said.
The layoffs signal that Meta Superintelligence Labs may be off to a rocky start. Meta executives are reportedly struggling to deal with bureaucratic and staffing issues surrounding its AI initiatives. Meta has reorganized its AI teams several times in recent months, most recently splitting its staff into four groups.
In July, Zuckerberg announced that another former OpenAI researcher, Shengjia Zhao, who played a key role in creating ChatGPT, would become MSL’s chief scientist. The announcement came after Zhao had tried to return to OpenAI — even signing employment papers, according to multiple sources.
