According to Wired, two more AI model developers at OpenAI have left the company to work on AI at Meta. This is not the first time Mark Zuckerberg’s company has lured away colleagues who worked together on projects at Sam Altman.
As Wired reports, one of them is OpenAI researcher Jason Wei, who will join the new superintelligence lab Meta.
He has worked on OpenAI’s o3 and deep research models since 2023, and before that he worked at Google, where he researched thought chains, which involve training an artificial intelligence model to process complex queries step by step.
At OpenAI, Wei became fascinated with reinforcement learning—a method of training or improving an AI model through positive or negative feedback. It has become a promising area of research in AI, and one that several researchers Meta has hired for its superintelligence team specialize in.
Another OpenAI employee who reportedly left the company for Meta is Hyung Won Chung. He worked on several of the same projects as Jason Wei, including deep research and the o1 model. He also worked at Google with Wei, and sources say he had a «close working relationship» with him. Insiders say Wei and Chung’s internal OpenAI Slack profiles are now deactivated.
Meta has previously lured groups of researchers with experience working together for its new superintelligence lab, including a trio from the Swiss office of OpenAI, which joined ChatGPT maker Google.
Over the past month, Meta has been actively recruiting talent, offering up to $300 million over four years to the best AI specialists.
Previously, former OpenAI researcher Lucas Baier, who left ChatGPT developer for Meta, said he did not receive a $100 million signing bonus when he joined Mark Zuckerberg’s company.
