Micron to invest $24 billion in chip manufacturing plant
Production will be deployed in Singapore, which will allow the company to expand capacity amid a shortage of memory chips caused by the development of artificial intelligence.

The new facility will be integrated into the company's existing manufacturing complex and will add approximately 65,000 square meters of cleanroom space required for semiconductor production.

Production is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2028. The main focus is on producing NAND memory, which is needed for data centers and AI infrastructure.

In addition to NAND, the company confirmed progress in expanding production of HBM (High-Bandwidth Memory), a high-speed memory critical for modern AI chips. The HBM packaging plant, located in the same complex, is expected to begin mass shipments as early as 2027.

The expansion of production capacity will create about 1,600 new jobs in Singapore.

Micron previously announced an investment of $7 billion over the next few years to expand production in Singapore to meet demand for advanced memory chips needed for artificial intelligence training.

The global RAM market is currently experiencing an unprecedented crisis, caused by the explosive demand for artificial intelligence chips. DRAM prices have increased by 171.8% in a year and have even exceeded the growth rate of the value of gold. A 64GB DDR5 memory kit already costs over $500 - more expensive than a PlayStation 5 game console.

dev.ua looked into what the DRAM shortage threatens for ordinary users, who is to blame, and how long the crisis will last.
