MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak reported that the parliament adopted in its entirety Law #11469 on the introduction of the institution of multiple citizenship in Ukraine. According to the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, Ruslan Stefanchuk, this is a signal to Ukrainians abroad that the state «does not turn away from its citizens».
On June 18, the Verkhovna Rada adopted as a whole Bill #11469 on Multiple Citizenship. 243 deputies voted for it, Zheleznyak reported.
It is noted that for the functioning of the institution of multiple citizenship, the Cabinet of Ministers will form a list of states whose citizenship Ukrainians can acquire in parallel, taking into account whether they have applied sanctions against Russia. This is reported by Sudovo-Yurydychna Gazeta. The list will also take into account whether the country is a member of the European Union.
Thus, renunciation of Ukrainian citizenship is optional for Ukrainians who have acquired citizenship of a country included in the list of the Cabinet of Ministers. The basis for losing Ukrainian citizenship is the voluntary acquisition of citizenship of a country that is not included in the list of states compiled by the Cabinet of Ministers.
«Ukraine does not force you to surrender your Ukrainian passport and take another one; in relations with Ukraine, you will forever be citizens of Ukraine. And we are waiting for you after the end of this terrible war», — Ruslan Stefanchuk said in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.
According to him, Ukraine will need its citizens to rebuild after the war with Russia. «Unlike the Russians, who today celebrate one million of their killed, wounded, injured, and so on, Ukrainians are fighting and worrying about every citizen of Ukraine», — Stefanchuk noted.
The draft law provides that the law on multiple citizenship will enter into force 6 months from the date of its publication. It is currently unknown which countries the Cabinet of Ministers will include in the list of «states whose citizens acquire Ukrainian citizenship in a simplified manner.»
