“We proposed a solution that could partially replace Starlink.” Sternenko spoke about the resumption of Starshield and partial alternatives to this technology for the front
Volunteer, head of the Sternenko Community charity foundation Serhiy Sternenko was one of the first to report on the restrictions on Starlink’s work on the front. Now, according to him, the situation has stabilized — and he attributes this to widespread publicity and further political pressure from Congress on the Pentagon and the Donald Trump administration. The volunteer also shared his vision of possible alternatives to Starlink for the front, which could partially compensate for it in various missions.
Sternenko said this in a comment to dev.ua during one of the charity events in Kyiv.
“As far as I know, as of now there are no restrictions on the operation of the Starshield system, they have been lifted. But this did not happen immediately. The first restrictions began to be partially lifted sometime in the evening of the first day, when the blocking began,” Sternenko noted.
According to him, different units shared different information — some lost communication at a speed of 150-160 km/h, others managed to work at speeds up to 200 km/h, but still, communication was also lost at higher speeds.
“About three days ago, I think, full access to the Starshield system was restored. I think this is due to domestic American pressure from Congress on the Pentagon, as well as on the Donald Trump administration. Publicity played the greatest role here,” the head of the charitable foundation stated.
"Sectorally, it is possible to partially replace the capabilities provided by Starlink with other technologies"
We also asked Serhiy Sternenko how realistic he sees the scenario of at least partially freeing himself from the Starlink monopoly through other technological solutions.
“I think we won’t buy and deploy our satellite group — at least, with this, it’s definitely up to another charitable foundation, but it didn’t have a group, but only one satellite,” Sternenko joked, referring to Serhiy Prytula’s foundation.
He stated that he does not see the possibility of completely replacing Starlink in the short term, but instead advises looking for alternative communication systems for each specific solution.
“What do I mean? If we are talking, for example, about using Starlink as front-line communications, then today we must lay fiber-optic Internet in every dugout during the construction of our engineering and fortification structures,” Sternenko claims.
According to him, it is necessary to use the existing infrastructure in frontline cities, which is not being used properly, and this is a very big challenge for the state.
“We talked about this with the General Staff — both when it was the previous one and with the current one. We have analysts who bring us some solutions. We will see how well they will be implemented,” the volunteer added.
If we talk about controlling drones, then, as Sternenko says, there are now alternative communication systems — not satellite ones.
“For example, digital communication, which can be used in both light drones and middle strike drones, and close the connection at a distance good enough for middle strike drones. That is, to work with controlled drones, including on the territory of the Russian Federation. But the state must form the demand for this,” stated Sergey Sternenko.
As he explained, it is still difficult for charitable foundations, even if they accumulate a sufficiently large financial resource to scale such technologies, to pressure the state to form an order for this type of communication.
“When new problems with Starlink began, the state became more active in the person of the top military-political leadership and various officials. I had a lot of communications that morning — because we had already gone to them some time before with a solution that could partially replace Starlink. That is, we cannot completely replace Starlink now, it is unrealistic, there is no satellite group that would allow us to do this. But sectorally, it is possible to partially replace the capabilities that Starlink provides with other technologies. It is simply a difficult task — it requires great efforts from the state,” explained Serhiy Sternenko.
He concluded that “we sometimes have difficulty making decisions in advance to anticipate our critical vulnerabilities, and often we are already running to catch up with a situation when it is on fire.”

Британець створив інструмент для злому Starlink з деталями на $25. Чи виведе він термінал з ладу? WIRED
