«We have decided to invest in GPON and are building only GPON from this year,» Oleksandr Komarov said in detail about the modernization plan recently adopted by Kyivstar.
The head of one of the largest mobile operators in Ukraine added that the company will upgrade the network in the largest cities to GPON over the next 12-18 months.
«We have the largest fixed network in the country. But it is built according to FTTB technology. It’s cool technology, it has no complaints except one. One extra outlet compared to GPON,» Oleksandr Komarov explained the company’s strategy.
FTTB (Fiber to the Building) technology is an optical fiber to the building, that is, it is a type of Internet connection. The «Home Internet» network from «Kyivstar» is built using FTTB technology: optics to the provider’s house switch with 220V power, and then, inside the house and to the user’s apartment, with a copper cable, better known as «twisted pair». A switch must be installed in the house, which must be connected to the outlet separately.
