Freelance or contract work? The UI/UX designer told which path she chose and why

UI/UX designer Marina Shevchenko shared her thoughts on the chosen path of development. Under the expert’s post, members of the design community also talk about their own experiences.

Hire or freelance?

Back at the beginning of the year, when I was taking design courses, I told everyone unanimously that I would never go freelance, citing stability, rapid development, and I just wanted to be in a team of purposeful people from whom I could learn .

But the reality turned out to be different, after finishing the courses, I realized that the IT market is too saturated. Junior designers are required to have a year of commercial experience (I couldn’t understand the logic of this at all at the time), and all of LinkedIn is littered with designers with «open to work» marks and no one is interested in your super diploma from courses.

Therefore, I spent a few months after finishing the courses on:

  • design of a high-quality portfolio on Behance,
  • consulted senior designers,
  • improved my skills
  • passed several mini-courses and mastered design layout without code,
  • created a working Instagram, in which she stated that she was creating turnkey sites and posted examples of work.

It was only a few hours after the creation of the page that the first serious client wrote to me. It was the owner of a well-known sweets boutique in my city, who needed a website. And then it went and went.

After this case, I was no longer looking for clients, but for me, the word of mouth worked and I started moving exclusively in this direction — freelancing, creating a turnkey website.

I can’t imagine another way for myself now. I work from home, I plan my own schedule, but I am also my own marketer, targetologist, project manager and SMM, because I do everything exclusively by myself. And I don’t want to work for someone anymore.

What other designers think

«I went freelance immediately after the courses, I understood the situation on the market, and all these cover letters and re-drafting of resumes in large quantities were stressing me out. At the moment, I do not regret it at all, although it happens in different ways. But when one day I received a job offer on Behance, then I tested it like two landos and understood that the need for you was most likely filled, then I understood that in the case of freelancing it was the right choice,» agrees UI/UX Designer Iryna Rudyk .

«I agree with the market situation. It is difficult to find a first job in a company without experience. I work as a freelancer, I received my first order through acquaintances and then by word of mouth. But I still continue to look for a job in the company, I want to live this experience and work in a team,» said Iryna Kachalina about her experience as a UI/UX Designer and Web Designer .

«I have an absolutely identical situation now as yours after the course and the same thoughts are already arising for freelancing,» wrote Junior UI/UX Designer Anna Dzikidze .

«Although I have a lot of experience working on commercial projects as a ui ux designer, I’m also thinking about creating turnkey sites, it’s just interesting to try, besides, I like working with web design and animation,» — Middle UX/UI designer Halyna Yavurek .

«I also had this thought: I only want to join the company. However, reality has shown that it will be necessary to start with freelancing. The first client was also from Instagram, then clients from LinkedIn came. Then finally there was a company. And there was not exactly what I imagined. And what I went to for so long turned out not to be my story. Therefore, freelancing, a free schedule and the same work-life balance are closer at the moment,» — UI/UX designer Olena Kovalenko .
