“He had a beer on his Telegram avatar” and “he cursed in a LinkedIn post.” The HR expert asked what the strangest reasons IT workers received for rejections were. The list is sometimes surprising.

HR expert Tetyana Dyagil asked the community about the most common questions asked to candidates during interviews.

«I’m browsing LinkedIn, reading different stories. They’re sad and not very good. There are even successful cases: Congratulations, I got an offer! But I want to have fun today. Tell me why you were rejected during your job search?
«What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever been turned down for?» she asked.

Tetyana herself said that the strangest thing for her was receiving two rejections at the same time for very similar vacancies in two companies in the same industry.
«In one rejection during a good and productive conversation with a recruiter, I was told that I was too mature and highly qualified for the role. According to the results of another, under similar conditions, I was recognized as not sufficiently senior and experienced for this company. Cognitive dissonance occurred. I thought for a long time: which ones should I choose: smart and qualified or not mature enough and senior,» the specialist shared.

The people of Aitutaki are happy to share their experiences.

Tetiana Shevchenko, Program Development and Operations Manager, was denied because she clarified the purpose of taking the polygraph. She also faced rejection because she agreed to consider an offer minus 30% of her publicly published salary.

PM Anna Pshenichna was refused due to having a child.

And the refusal of Project Manager Natalia Gapchun was explained by the fact that «the vacancy is already closed, we forgot to delete it.»

«I was rejected for the position of copywriter because I live outside the city and have my own house. Well, the classic of the genre is a mother of two children (constant sick leave, „who will work for you?“),» says Galyna Logvinenko, a current recruit.

IT Specialist Ivan Kuznetsov said that he was rejected because his Telegram avatar had beer on it. «They said it was irresponsible to go to an interview with such an avatar, and it should be changed. I advised her to replace her glass of water with red, and feel at least that drop of holiness that the Gods have given us,» the specialist explained.

«The strangest case was when I was denied the position of Director because all the top managers were men — and the reason for the denial was that I wouldn’t be able to go to the bathhouse with them, and the company holds all top managers' meetings only there🥴 it was back in 2015,» said Oksana Soroka .

And here is a story from Head of Talent Management Lyudmila Zaruba. «I once had the following dialogue:

  • How old are you?
  • 28.
  • When are you going on maternity leave?
  • I’m not going to in the coming years.
  • But you can’t be sure, it’s an unpredictable thing.
  • ( Meanwhile, I gather my thoughts and prepare a sarcastic response. And the man continues .)
  • We just had a previous girlfriend, she just got into the swing of things and went on maternity leave. It’s hard for you girls.»

Recruiter Viktoria Mirkevych said that she was not hired because she smiled and joked.

«My temperament did not match the customer’s requirements — this is the best Hit in my TOP so far,» said QA Specialist Yevgen Stogniy .

HR BP Anastasia Shevchuk says she was rejected for being «too calm» and with the wording «you understand, you are both over and underqualified.»

«The manager said he wants a girl, so he’s not ready to move forward with your candidacy»… and this is after the first stage with the agency’s recruiter.
«Well, OK, but it’s strange that he doesn’t know where to go in such cases, and it’s a pity that the time spent on this communication is wasted,» HRD Yar Bozhyk shared his story.

And here are the top failures of Senior Front-End developer Artem Bohdan:

  • I didn’t want to sit on 24/7 tech support for free.
  • I said during the interview that I would like to work full-stack in the future, but the vacancy is just a front.
  • I used swear words in a past LinkedIn post and used language that was inconsistent with the company culture, as well as speaking negatively about past companies (even though it was an honest, objective assessment of past experience).
  • I had noise in the background.
  • I was stronger than the guy who interviewed me, and that’s not okay (I agree with that, by the way).
  • Low level of Polish.
  • I didn’t know the ultra-niche stuff that nobody knows. That happened twice in all my time. Once with transfer objects. Once with the nuances of building video services.

“I don’t see the point in calling you. You either do the job or you don’t.” The recruiter refused to discuss the details of the job and immediately provided a test task. Is this the new norm?
