An IT couple created a non-GPS navigator "Orientyr" for the iPhone: it plots a route, finds the right address, and shows traffic jams
Ukrainian developers, a couple Vladislav and Daryna Shynkarenko, have created a new mobile application "Orientyr: Navigator without GPS". The main feature of the development is the ability to guide the driver along the route even in the complete absence of a GPS signal or mobile Internet, which is extremely relevant for electronic warfare operating conditions and communication failures.
In just two weeks after its release on the App Store, the application was downloaded over 23,000 times, and the program itself has remained in the top 3 in the "Navigation" category for almost all this time.
How does "Orientyr" work in case of GPS failures?
The Landmark application combines the capabilities of a standard everyday navigator and a non-GPS navigation system.
Under normal conditions, it allows you to plan routes with multiple stops, search for addresses to house numbers in cities or villages, track traffic jams, cameras, and road signs from other drivers, as well as choose alternative routes at forks. Thanks to downloading maps of individual regions or districts, search and navigation remain functional even without the Internet.
If the satellite signal disappears, "Landmark" switches to autonomous mode: using the smartphone's motion sensors, the algorithm calculates speed and turns, holding the marker on the map. The driver independently indicates the starting point and can correct the position with a double tap if the mark has shifted, and for the best accuracy, it is recommended to securely fix the phone in the holder.
Statistics and development plans
According to the developers, from October 6 to 24, drivers who voluntarily share anonymized statistics (about 20% of users) covered more than 34,000 km with the "Orientyr" with GPS and almost 9,000 km directly in the mode of no satellite signal. The real total mileage is estimated to be about five times more.
The application is distributed completely free of charge, without advertising and without the requirement to register.
The Android version is currently in closed beta on Google Play. The team plans a full release for Android users and CarPlay support in November, with Android Auto integration planned for December.
Recall that previously dev.ua talked about the Android applications Azimut GPS and BlindDriver .

YASNO has added an "Autopilot" feature for home batteries to the app. The user will be able to determine how much charge to leave in case of a power outage.
