Not just Slack and Notion

In particular, Roosh uses Slack as a tool for solving work issues. Notion is used for working with teams, project management, and synchronization.

Pingle Studio also uses Slack for internal communication with employees. In addition, PeopleForce and email are used. Tasks are set through Jira. The company does not use Telegram as a means of communication.

Daryna Kuzmyk, Talent&Culture Lead at Railsware, says that Slack is also the company’s main communication tool. «It provides a comfortable environment for team interaction and asynchronous communication. It also has convenient integration with other services that we use in our daily work,» she explains. In addition, Railsware uses email, Google Meet for online meetings, and Atlassian ecosystem tools (such as Jira, Confluence, and our own TitanApps products) for business communication and coordination.

«Telegram is not a channel for internal communication in the company. At the same time, colleagues can use it informally for quick private messaging. In addition, the „crisis“ group on Telegram became a tool for quick communication between colleagues in Ukraine in the first days of the full-scale invasion, when it was necessary to exchange information as quickly as possible. It still exists now, but it is more of a space for exchanging memes,» explains Kuzmik. According to her, sometimes Telegram has to be used for quick communication with third parties. «For example, when we order something for printing or rent a room. In particular, in cases where it is convenient for both parties or when this form of communication is already common in certain communities. But this is not about sensitive data,» she says.

Talent&Culture Lead at Railsware adds: the company’s information security experts note that Telegram lacks many options for a corporate environment. «In particular, the company’s IT department cannot centrally manage colleagues' Telegram accounts, conveniently manage access to groups and channels, log activity, etc. In addition, end-to-end encryption only works in „secret chats“, and an independent audit cannot verify how data is stored and processed on Telegram servers. The jurisdiction of the parent company of this messenger also complicates possible legal liability, so there is no shortage of arguments „against“ using Telegram for corporate purposes,» says Daryna.

Ciklum also says that Telegram and other unsecured messengers are not official tools for internal communication at Ciklum. «They do not provide proper access control and protection against unauthorized data leakage, and therefore do not meet our standards for protecting client and corporate information,» the company explains. Ciklumists do not recommend and have never recommended using Telegram or any other third-party messengers to discuss work issues. «This approach has existed for a long time and is primarily related to information protection requirements and compliance with corporate security policies. The use of unauthorized channels creates additional risks in terms of control, liability, and the ability to conduct investigations in the event of incidents,» the company says. Ciklum uses Google Chat and Workvivo for internal communication and interaction with teams. «These platforms meet our requirements for maintaining confidentiality and full integration with the corporate security infrastructure,» the company says.

In SoftServe, the main communication channels in SoftServe are corporate email, internal social network and Microsoft Teams. «Corporate policies clearly regulate the list of channels for internal communication, and are limited to internal secure systems. Until recently, Workplace from Meta was also an internal information platform, through which a lot of internal communication with employees was carried out, however, this tool stopped working, so we switched to LumArps,» they answered a request from dev.ua. As for external communications, SoftServe has a public channel in Telegram — SoftServe Education, through which it informs about its educational opportunities, SoftServe Academy courses, introduces IT professions, etc. It was created in 2017 and is currently being used while we explore the possibility of migration to other platforms.

Which messenger is more reliable?

Meanwhile, Roman Kolomiets, CEO of Leitz GmbH & Co. KG, conducted a study on the security of various messengers from third-party influence based on 8 parameters. He allowed us to share the results of his research with dev.ua users.
