OpenAI buys startup Statsig for $1.1 billion and brings CEO to management

Along with the deal, CNBC reports, Statsig CEO Vijay Raji will join OpenAI as chief technology officer in the applications division and will report directly to Fiji Simo, former CEO of Instacart.

«Collaborating with the incredible team at OpenAI to create AI experiences for people and businesses is a rare and important opportunity. Doing so with the tools we built at Statsig is especially gratifying,» Raji wrote on LinkedIn.

Statsig will continue to operate independently from its Seattle office and serve clients. The deal is still subject to regulatory approvals.

Fiji Simo commented: «Vijay has a unique track record of building large-scale B2B and consumer products and systems.»

Let us remind you that this is not OpenAI’s first major acquisition in 2024–2025:

• in May, the company bought Jony Ive’s startup IO (AI devices) for $6.5 billion;
• in June, it acquired Rockset (analytical database), the amount was not disclosed;
• At the beginning of the year, OpenAI tried to acquire Windsurf (AI coding) for $3 billion, but the deal fell through — the startup went to Google through a licensing deal for $2.4 billion.
