As TechRadar reports, OpenAI has struck a deal with Google Cloud to use its capacity to run ChatGPT and related APIs in the US, UK, Japan, the Netherlands and Norway. The company is expanding its cloud infrastructure amid a global GPU shortage and increasing workloads on its models.
Microsoft remains an important partner for OpenAI, but is no longer the exclusive supplier, retaining only the «right of first refusal.» In addition, OpenAI also uses other services, including Oracle and CoreWeave, indicating a systemic strategy of diversification.
The Google Cloud connection was another step towards reducing the risk of «lock-in» while achieving better access to innovative solutions. According to Reuters, negotiations were ongoing even before the end of the exclusivity with Microsoft, but only now have the companies been able to move on to implementing the partnership.
OpenAI is actively preparing to launch its own computing accelerators, which will reduce its dependence on external cloud providers. Meanwhile, competition among providers is growing, as they all offer their own ChatGPT counterparts: from Claude to Gemini. Against this background, OpenAI seeks to maintain a technical advantage without betting on one card in the infrastructure issue.
This is a significant achievement for Google: despite being the third-largest cloud provider in the world, its generative AI client base is much smaller than AWS or Microsoft Azure. However, Google is already working with another player in this market, Anthropic, founded by former OpenAI employees.
We also recently wrote about how OpenAI launched a universal agent in ChatGPT: capable of controlling an entire computer and performing multi-step tasks. The company says the agent can automatically navigate a calendar, create editable presentations and slideshows, and run code.
