The rapid reduction in the time it takes AI tools to complete certain tasks suggests that the transition to "advanced" artificial intelligence is already on the horizon, according to a report by OpenAI, "Industrial Policy in the Age of Intelligence," the BBC reports .
“If progress continues, we can expect systems to be able to complete projects that currently take humans months to complete,” the company said. “This shift will change how organizations work, how knowledge is created, and how people find meaning and opportunity.”
The company believes that to prepare for these changes, businesses should be encouraged to seek “sustainable improvements in employee welfare” — for example, by testing a four-day workweek with full pay.
Businesses could also increase pension contributions, cover more healthcare costs, and subsidize childcare, OpenAI said.
This is not the first time a major AI company has presented its vision for the social and economic transformations needed to manage the growing demand for technology.
Some of OpenAI’s proposals — such as creating a “state welfare fund” that would allow citizens to share in AI-driven economic growth — echo ideas published in October by competitor Anthropic.
The report states that workers and students must master the skills needed for the jobs of the future, and planning processes should be reviewed to ensure that energy and computing infrastructure is built.
