Chief Marketing Officer Danylo Orlov shared a story from his own experience in which an employer invited a specialist to an office interview, but the candidate, namely Danylo, made a counter-demand to the recruiter. This case is currently being actively discussed by IT professionals on LinkedIn.

«I can only come if I get a taxi fare.» A marketer who was invited to an office interview offered his employer to reimburse him for his transportation costs. Here’s what happened

«A company recently wrote to me with an offer to talk. The project looked interesting, so I agreed to the first contact, we corresponded a bit, and then — an invitation to come to the office for an interview. The position is categorical, only the office. For me, this is already a bad signal, in my opinion, in the early stages of acquaintance it is quite comfortable to take place online. If cooperation suits both parties — then you can talk about the office, and then as an option, but not necessarily,» the specialist noted in the post.

According to Danylo, he paused, thought, and wrote that he would be able to come only if he was compensated for the taxi fare. «The reason is simple: I didn’t apply for the job, the company took the initiative, and the trip would have taken at least an hour one way,» he argued.

In response, the man received a refusal. «The company was not ready to cover the costs, and I was not ready to spend my resources on an offline meeting without guarantees. An interview is a dialogue, not a one-sided process. If you are interested in a candidate, you should show it not only with words,» the specialist explained.

Orlov asked the community about their attitude towards offline interviews in the early stages.

There are over 50 comments under his post.

«I look at it as an investment over a 10-year period, this trip could have radically changed my life and taken my career to a new level. Three hours could have been wasted. Oh well. The multiplier is obvious. But the same time is spent on the post and on replies in the comments with zero ROI. Those who write that you need to value your time, go to screen time and see how much time is wasted on Instagram, TikTok and other networks,» said Petro Nikolayev, CPO at Boosta.

Edward Rudenko, Business Development Expert, believes that the format of work and interviews should be agreed upon right on the shore. «But being categorical is not the best option. Offer a compromise. Like I did. One company invited me to an office on the other side of the city, motivating it by the fact that it is so convenient for the manager.
I replied as follows: „Let’s do it this way. If there is an interesting online call, I will then come to your office to personally shake hands with the Manager and discuss the details of your offer. I will also look at my future office and get to know the team before accepting the offer.“ This impressed HR and caused them to respect communicating with me. When you demonstrate that you value your time, we are saying that you are a professional who is in demand in the market. Therefore, value your time,» he noted.

«Everyone has their own vision and their own criteria when searching. But I don’t see any point in holding the first stage of the interview in the office (even though there may be several of them),» notes Kateryna Bobrovnik, HRBP.
