The developer created a tool for transferring files between phones via QR codes at speeds of up to 190 KB/s. How Decimen Optical Transfer works
A developer named bashalarmistalt (aka Alstroph on Reddit) has created a proof-of-concept system for transferring data between phones that doesn’t require any apps, shared networks, pairing, or permissions other than camera access. The data is transmitted via a stream of QR codes that change rapidly on the screen at up to 60 frames per second, and is received by a regular phone camera simply through a browser.

The data is transmitted via a stream of QR codes that change rapidly on the screen at up to 60 frames per second, and is received by a regular phone camera simply through a browser.
According to the developer, the idea came from the need to transfer files between phones that are not on the same network. The solution was to use «rapidly flashing QR codes.»
The technology is built on fountain codes, which ensures that dropped frames or retransmissions do not interfere with the data transfer process. Each transmitted QR code frame is self-describing: a 20-byte header contains the session ID, sequence number, number and size of blocks, file length, and hash.
According to the developer’s test data, data transfer can reach speeds of up to 190 KB/s. On an iPhone with Apple’s ProMotion camera and overlapping codes, it was possible to achieve about 128 KB/s in handheld mode, and if both devices — the transmitting and receiving ones — are held absolutely still, the speed increases to about 186 KB/s.
According to the author, he created a cached web application for the project using Claude Code — the application simply runs in the browser on both smartphones with access to the camera. The developer admits that similar projects have existed before, but claims that he came up with the concept for his solution independently.
