As a result, runways at Stewart International Airport near New York were closed for an hour. This did not affect flight operations. Local authorities are calling for an investigation into drone incidents.
Meanwhile, New York Governor Katie Hochul called on the New York State Intelligence Center to investigate the incidents, following this and other cases of unidentified UAVs that began in November. She said the federal government should also do more because "this has gone too far."
In the state of New Jersey, locals have been spotting UAVs for a month, periodically calling them “UFOs.” Drones have been spotted near the Picatinny Arsenal military base and Trump’s golf club in Bedminster, in particular. The White House said most of the drones seen are actually manned, and that they pose no danger to civilians. The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) added that the increase in drone sightings was due to their popularity, which it also described as "safe."
Some congressmen and senators have suggested that Iran may be behind the drone launches. For example, Congressman Jeff Van Drew suggested that the UFOs could be a sign of an Iranian "mothership" launching drones near the US coast. Pentagon Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh, in turn, stated that "there is no evidence of an Iranian ship near the US" and emphasized that these drones "do not pose a threat to our facilities."
