Italian Bending Spoons to acquire video platform Vimeo with offices in Ukraine for $1.39 billion

Video platform Vimeo announced that it will be acquired by Italian app development company Bending Spoons. Vimeo has lost about 90% of its market value since going public in 2021. The company has fewer than 100 employees in its Ukrainian offices.

Vimeo shareholders will receive $7.85 per share, a 63% premium, Reuters reported. Shares of the company jumped more than 60% to $7.74 on news of the deal. After the deal closes in the fourth quarter of 2025, Vimeo will become a private company and its shares will no longer be listed on any public stock exchange.

Vimeo was previously spun off from IAC by American media manager and entrepreneur Barry Diller and has lost about 90% of its market value since going public in 2021. It competes in a crowded video services market with YouTube and TikTok.

«After the deal is approved, we should expect significant cost-cutting measures and a very clear focus on generating revenue through the use of Vimeo’s technology assets,» said PP Foresight analyst Paolo Pescatore.

Bending Spoons' business model is focused on reorganizing and growing the companies and products it acquires. Last July, it acquired file-sharing service WeTransfer. The Vimeo acquisition is the largest deal in the company’s history.

In Ukraine, the company has a division called Vimeo Ukraine Technologies, headed by Yulia Piven. The head office is located in Zaporizhia, and there are also workspaces in Kyiv.

In 2023, it became known that Vimeo intended to reduce the number of its employees by 11%. Among the specialists who were laid off were Ukrainians.

In May 2025, Yulia Piven told DOU that Vimeo’s Ukrainian offices had fewer than 100 employees. Previously, the division had more specialists, but the company was forced to «diversify risks» due to the Russian full-scale invasion.

«If it weren’t for the invasion, we would have expanded a lot in Ukraine. In February 2022, we hired a separate onboarding specialist because we understood that a wave of people would leave now and the internal team wouldn’t be able to cope,» said the director of Vimeo Ukraine Technologies.

According to the IT Ukraine Association, the Ukrainian Vimeo employs 86 people. According to Yulia Piven, the division should have over 250 specialists in total.

«Instead, other offices have grown to this number (from the number we have now). I think Ukraine could give Vimeo even more specialists, because we have many deep technical specialists that the company needs so much,» noted Yulia Piven.
