According to Interesting Engineering, Subway Surfers City is scheduled for a global release on February 26th, and will be free-to-play on iOS and Android with optional in-app purchases. The developers are pitching it as a standalone project, not an update: the original Subway Surfers will remain available in parallel.
The main change is that the races are being moved to the connected space of Subway City. At the start, four districts with different routes and designs are promised: The Docks, Southline, Sunrise Blvd, and Delorean Park. Visually, the game has been updated with brighter animations and more detailed locations, and the «city world» itself is planned to be expanded with each season with new neighborhoods, characters, skins, and hoverboards.
In the gameplay, in addition to the classic endless mode, there will be City Tour, which is shorter races-"levels» with tasks and searching for hidden stars in specific areas. An event mode with timed challenges will also be added. Among the new techniques are mentioned accelerators on the track, as well as hitting the ground after a jump, which helps activate or pick up hidden bonuses, and an «elastic shield» that makes jumps easier and saves on difficult sections.
The Subway Surfers series is approaching its 15th anniversary, and the developers are talking about over 4.5 billion downloads and an audience on social networks of over 30 million. In Subway Surfers City, the studio is trying to add more structure to the usual «chase the record» so that the game keeps the interest not only with records, but also with progress and seasonal content.
