The wedding of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and journalist Lauren Sanchez, which will take place this week in Venice, has been moved from the city’s historic center to a more remote area for security reasons and to prevent protests.
The tech mogul and his bride had originally planned to celebrate their wedding in the popular central district of Cannaregio, but for weeks before that, local residents and activist groups had complained that the event would turn the picturesque gondola town into a private amusement park for the wealthy, and had threatened to block the festivities.
The exact date of the wedding is still a secret, but it is expected to take place between Thursday and Saturday, and will be attended by around 200-250 VIP guests from the world of show business, politics and finance.
No. 4 on the Forbes billionaires list, Bezos, 61, got engaged to Sanchez, 55, in 2023, four years after the breakup of his 25-year marriage to MacKenzie Scott.
According to CNN, protesters opposing a billionaire’s wedding in a historic district declared victory after their threats and actions thwarted the plans.
«We won! The protest succeeded in destroying Bezos’ plans… They were forced to flee and hide,» the group «No Place for Bezos» said in an online post.
Meanwhile, dev.ua reported that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos' Bezos Expeditions led a $72 million investment round for Toloka, a company specializing in training, testing, and validating data for AI. The Ukrainian-based startup is raising new funding to scale in the U.S. market.
