The American company Instacart has created «smart shopping carts» with AI Cart Assistant, which will help users make decisions about what to buy.
Instacart is adding the AI tool to websites for retailers it operates, as well as to some of its Caper smart carts. Business Insider reports that the first Cart Assistant AI carts will be available at Sprouts Farmers Market stores.
The chain plans to add Cart Assistant to Caper carts in its stores, Instacart said last week. The company has been expanding its use of smart carts since acquiring Caper AI in 2021. The carts automatically scan items as customers place them in their carts and have screens that let users track their spending, get coupons and pay for purchases.
According to Rogers, an AI agent will be added to this list of functions.
«Imagine going to the store to buy groceries for a party for 10 people and asking Cart Assistant what to buy within your budget,» said Instacart CEO Chris Rogers.
He added that the AI agent could also help customers shop, including checking whether a selected product contains unwanted ingredients. For example, a user could ask the AI to check products for gluten.
Cart Assistant can also be used to track out-of-stock items in a store or analyze product data to provide customers with better shopping suggestions.
