Sam Altman confirmed that Mark Zuckerberg tried to lure OpenAI engineers for $100 million

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently confirmed rumors of Meta’s aggressive hiring strategy, saying that Mark Zuckerberg’s company is offering its employees compensation packages worth more than $100 million.
As TechCrunch reports, these offers concern specialists that Meta seeks to attract to its new superintelligence development team under the leadership of former Scale AI CEO Alexander Wang, which Meta acquired for $14.3 billion. However, as Altman noted in a podcast with his brother Jack Altman, these attempts have so far been largely in vain.
«Meta started making huge offers to a lot of people on our team. A $100 million signing bonus. I’m very happy that, at least so far, none of our top employees have decided to take his offer,» Altman said on his brother’s podcast.
Altman suggests that his employees believe OpenAI has a better chance of achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI) and could become a more valuable company in the future. He also suggested that Meta’s emphasis on high compensation packages rather than the mission of creating AGI is unlikely to foster a successful corporate culture.
According to reports, Meta tried to lure away OpenAI lead researcher Noam Brown, as well as Google AI architect Koray Cavukcuoglu, but both attempts were unsuccessful.
Meta’s aggressive policy of building a successful superintelligence lab has already attracted Wang’s company, Scale AI, and some star researchers, such as Jack Ray of Google DeepMind and Johan Schalkwyk of Sesame AI.
However, Mark Zuckerberg’s company is not alone in this approach of luring AI specialists from competing companies. Previously, dev.ua wrote that Anthropic is pulling talent from OpenAI and DeepMind, in particular, OpenAI co-founder John Schulman left OpenAI for Anthropic.
