Shuji Utsumi, president of Sega and CEO of Sega America and Sega Europe, spoke about the idea in an interview with the BBC. «We’re thinking about some things — and discussing some things — that we can’t reveal right now,» he said.
Specific details about the subscription service are unknown, but it could resemble the Netflix model of giving access to certain games to subscribers who pay a monthly fee. Game subscriptions are already offered by companies such as PlayStation, Xbox, Electronic Arts and Ubisoft. In particular, Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus have an audience of about 80 million gamers and provide access to games every month.
Utsumi became the new CEO of Sega in January of this year. In the interview, he also spoke about the state of the company and its plans for the future.
«Sega has a great RPG group, Sega has amazing IPs, Sega is a really well-known brand.» But somehow it’s «losing confidence,» Utsumi believes.
Nvidia previously announced that starting in 2025, its GeForce NOW cloud gaming service will have a limit on the number of hours available to subscribers each month. Additional hours will be available for a separate fee.
