«I want to share the process that helped me always move to an even greater salary in every company»: Senior Technical Product Manager voiced his five-step personal development plan

Senior Technical Product Manager Andriy Osypenko shared with the IT community a personal development plan, which he believes will be useful for all IT people and which he used himself.

«We all know how PDPs work in companies. Managers „walk“ through important 1-1 meetings, assigning you „template“ PDPs that are in no way adapted to the market, your desires and skill level. Therefore, today I want to share with you a process that I went through 3-4 times during my career. And which helped to always remain relevant and to move to an even greater salary in each company», — Osypenko wrote on his LinkedIn page.

Its step-by-step plan is as follows:

1️⃣ Go to DOU/Djinni and select 10-15 jobs of a higher level than you currently have;

2️⃣ Read their description and write down each element that causes concern.

According to Osypenko, it is important to pay attention to some specific points for each role, and not copy paste a la: Exceptional communication or Strong leadership skills.

For example, for a product it can be:

— Custdev: Survey tools and Interview experience

— Skills in data analysis and data science to understand how those products will be used

3️⃣ Rate them from 1-10, where 10 means you are very unsure about any issue. 1 — you feel confident, but not perfect. This will give you priority to study the material.

4️⃣ Drop this list into ChatGPT with this prompt:

Create a personal development plan for me with links to the most important articles/tutorials/videos in each of these fields:

— Custdev: Survey tools and Interview experience

— Skills in data analysis and data science to understand how those products will be used

PS don’t forget to activate the search function.

«This will give you a minimum set of references on each of the topics to absorb the 20% of information that will give you 80% of the answers you need,» he emphasized.

5️⃣ And as a task with an asterisk — Google each of the domains you have chosen, with posts such as:

— Best books about…

— Best articles about …

«ChatGPT usually selects not the best resources, but they are good enough to start familiarizing yourself with the chosen domain,» concluded the IT expert.

Most of the citizens of Haiti rated such articles as useful.

«The mechanics are cool, but, in my opinion, it is worth emphasizing that the PDP is a two-way process. And if the manager has a desire or a task to draw up a PDP, and the employee does not give his points, then it turns out that the specialist develops where the company has indicated, and not where the specialist is better. It seems that everything is logical, and there is no one to take offense at, except yourself. The development of one’s subjectivity is the task of the person himself», — comments Product leader Oleksandr Panchenko.

«Thanks for the advice, I’ll try! I think it will be more structured than just going to random courses and reading random articles. Although this was beneficial, there was not enough focus», — says Head of Project Management Dana Lanova.
