Ukrainian IT guy created a toolkit for Home Assistant: how to develop custom integrations and UI cards using AI

What kind of tool is this?

As Denis Dovgan explained on LinkedIn, Home Assistant Developer is a set of instructions and skills for the Codex and Claude Code AI assistants. The main feature of the toolkit is that it provides the AI ​​with up-to-date context regarding the Home Assistant architecture, its internal rules, and modern documentation for contributors, protecting the developer from using outdated methods.

The toolkit includes two key skills:

• home-assistant-integration — creation and review of Python integrations taking into account official Home Assistant quality requirements and documentation.
• home-assistant-card — development and testing of custom Lovelace cards and their editors.

Important: These skills provide development instructions only and do not connect directly to running Home Assistant instances to control them.

Practical experience and examples

According to Denis, with the help of this setup, he already develops and supports most of his own projects, including many useful services for Ukrainians:

• Yasno Outages — monitoring of power outage schedules;

• Aerial Danger — tracking aerial threats;

• integration of weather from the Ukrhydrometeorological Center and water indicators from Kyivvodokanal;

• vacuum-card is a popular card for convenient control of robot vacuum cleaners.

The developer demonstrated the effectiveness of the tool at the DevDay Exchange Community Kyiv conference: during a live demo, he created a working integration for a solar power plant in his home using just one prompt.

Project goal

Denys Dovhan hopes that this toolkit will help the community more easily create integrations for their own needs, and expresses hope to see more Ukrainian services integrated into the Home Assistant ecosystem.
