Companies that rushed to replace human labor with artificial intelligence are now forced to spend a lot of money to have people correct mistakes made by AI.

As the BBC reports, a kind of «contract market» has now emerged for copywriters and programmers who specialize in fixing AI bugs — and those who do it well can make a good living from it.

Sarah Skidd, a product marketing manager from the US, told a British broadcaster that she is not worried about the possible replacement of her AI, because, as her experience shows, she is increasingly being hired to correct the numerous mistakes made by algorithms.

Earlier this year, she was approached by an agency urgently looking for someone to rewrite texts for a client, after they had cut costs on a copywriter and outsourced the work to an unknown AI chatbot. The text was typical of machine writing—“very basic» and uninteresting, says Skidd.

«It was supposed to sell and intrigue,» she told the BBC, «but instead it was completely colorless.»

She ended up having to completely rewrite the text, spending 20 hours on it. At a rate of $100/hour, it cost the client $2,000 — and it probably would have been much cheaper if they had gone to a professional right away.

After a wave of mass layoffs and attempts to replace people with AI, companies are facing unexpected consequences.

Sophie Warner, co-owner of British digital agency Create Designs, confirms that there are more and more requests from clients asking to fix AI errors.

«Previously, clients would write to us when they wanted to change something on the site or add functionality,» she said. «Now they go to ChatGPT first.»

In one case, a client was left without a website for three days and paid the agency nearly $500 because of a botched code change suggested by AI, something that Warner notes would have taken no more than 15 minutes to make manually.

«We often have to charge only for diagnostics because clients don’t want to admit that the problem is in AI. And the fix takes much longer than if they had immediately contacted a specialist,» she added.

Despite the fact that they are now cashing in on technology’s mistakes, neither Skidd nor Warner are categorically against AI — they are just disappointed that people believe it can completely replace human expertise.

«While it seems like a quick and cheap solution, AI rarely takes into account brand uniqueness, target audience, or outcome-oriented design,» explains Warner. «It simply cannot replace human experience and context.»

Skidd, for her part, is confident in her professional stability even in a world dominated by AI: «Maybe I’m naive,» she says, «but if you’re really good at what you do, there won’t be any problems.»
