Defender Media, a new online publication dedicated to defense innovations, has been launched in Ukraine. The goal is to become the main information resource about Ukrainian defense tech, as well as help startups attract investments and international partners. That is why Defender Media will publish materials in two languages from the start — Ukrainian and English.
Defender Media is founded by Dan Smirnov, Roman Sudolsky, and Nick Zharov. They began working on the project in the fall of 2024, and Defender Media later attracted investment from corporate venture fund Sigma Software Labs.
«Defender Media will replenish the portfolio of investment projects of the Swedish-Ukrainian group of companies Sigma Software, but as with classic startups, our media will retain its identity and pursue an independent and unbiased editorial policy,» emphasizes Roman Sudolsky, editor-in-chief of Defender Media.
Currently, the Ukrainian defense tech industry is estimated at at least $1 billion. Thus, according to the Brave1 defense technology cluster, over 1,500 new companies have appeared in Ukraine over the three years of the war, producing drones, robots, electronic warfare equipment, and other innovative defense products. In 2024, investments in Ukrainian defense startups reached more than $50 million. This year, this figure has every chance of growing to $100 million.
«Defense Tech is almost the only industry that is demonstrating exponential growth in Ukraine. Moreover, this industry is critically important for the survival of the state. However, the industry has lacked a specialized publication on defense tech that would focus on the business component of the industry. We have corrected this and plan to bring the media to the international level,» says Dan Smirnov, CEO and CPO of Defender Media.
«We are actively developing the Defence Tech direction, investing in both strategic and more public defence companies, last year we co-founded the Defence Builder accelerator, which is already preparing the second set of teams. At the same time, we see a big gap in the information field — there is a lack of a specialized resource that would help key players navigate the Ukrainian defence industry and integrate it into the global context. This is critically important,» says Darya Yanieva, head of defence at Sigma Software Group and investment director at Sigma Software Labs. «In our group, we always support internal entrepreneurship and look for new ideas for investment, so Defender Media logically complements our ecosystem, and we decided to support this project.»
The Defender Media team is open to partnerships and collaborations. The project currently has vacancies for full-time and freelance journalists.
