Former OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutzkever testified on Monday that he spent about a year gathering evidence for OpenAI’s board of directors, which was supposed to expose a «continuous pattern of lies» by the company’s CEO, Sam Altman.
Sutzkever stated such evidence during his testimony in the lawsuit between OpenAI and Elon Musk, Reuters reports .
Sutzkever also confirmed that he had «considered taking steps to remove Altman as CEO for at least a year before the board of directors voted to remove Altman in November 2023.»
He said that at the request of OpenAI’s board of directors, he prepared a document containing evidence of Altman’s dishonesty, and added that Altman’s behavior included «undermining authority and pitting executives against each other.»
In previous testimony, Sutzkever indicated that his evidence document contained 52 pages.
The publication recalls that Sutzkever played a key role in the dramatic dismissal and re-hiring of Altman in November 2023, because at that time Sutzkever was a member of the board of directors of OpenAI and «helped» to dismiss Altman. However, he later «backpedaled» — worried that the company could go bankrupt, he expressed regret for his «participation in the actions of the board of directors» and voted to reinstate Altman.
Sutzkever’s testimony came in the third week of the trial. Recall that Elon Musk, who also co-founded OpenAI but left the board in 2018, accused OpenAI and Altman of abandoning its non-profit roots and turning it into a for-profit company for his own enrichment. Musk is seeking $150 billion in damages from OpenAI and its sponsor Microsoft, as well as the dismissal of Altman and President Greg Brockman from their positions.
Recall that Ilya Sutzkever was born in Nizhny Novgorod, but at the age of 5 he moved to Israel.
