The Telegram platform earned $343 million more in 2024 than in 2023 and for the first time achieved an annual profit of $540 million.
This is reported by Forbes Ukraine with reference to the Financial Times. According to the Telegram report, the service is growing rapidly and was able to move from $173 million in losses in 2023 to $540 million in profit in 2024. This was not prevented even by the problems of the Telegram founder with French law enforcement officers.
The proceeds were reportedly shared with potential backers before Telegram launched a bond offering worth about $1.5 billion to buy back its debt. The sale began on May 20 and could close as early as next week.
In 2024, Telegram earned $250 million from advertising and $292 million from premium subscription sales. About $700 million was also brought in by «partnerships and ecosystem».
Telegram expects to generate $2 billion in revenue next year, up 46% from last year. The service expects profits to be $720 million.
Telegram is also considering an IPO, but only if «the markets become more friendly,» according to Telegram’s chief investment officer, John Hyman. The company acknowledges that the arrest of Telegram founder Pavel Durov in France could hinder the initial public offering.
Durov previously spoke out against a French bill to introduce backdoors for law enforcement into messengers. According to him, Telegram would rather leave the market than compromise encryption with backdoors and «violate basic human rights.»
