"Gives equal opportunities to extroverts and introverts to demonstrate their expertise." Why are test cases needed (and are they really necessary): arguments from Ciklum, Railsware, Futurra Group, and Master of Code Global
IT professionals' pain point is testing. They are often complex, voluminous, time-consuming, and sometimes illogical, experts complain. We asked employers whether testing tasks are really necessary, and whether they can be replaced with a GitHub/portfolio review. Here’s what they told us.
IT professionals' pain point is testing. They are often complex, voluminous, time-consuming, and sometimes illogical, experts complain. We asked employers whether testing tasks are really necessary, and whether they can be replaced with a GitHub/portfolio review. Here’s what they told us.
Anna Bodrukhina, Talent Acquisition Specialist at Futurra Group, says that test tasks help assess the candidate’s practical skills and understand how they think during real tasks. «At the same time, this is an opportunity for a person to see what tasks they will have to work with every day and understand how interesting they are. The main thing is that the task is relevant, otherwise there is a risk of losing a strong specialist,» she notes.
However, for experienced professionals, in her opinion, it is often enough to view GitHub or a portfolio to assess the level of competencies and work style.
Meanwhile, Ciklum emphasizes that test tasks remain an important tool for honest and objective assessment of candidates. «We strive to make the selection process as transparent and comfortable as possible, so for most technical positions we use tests on the HackerRank platform. The tasks are created and checked by our internal technical experts, which guarantees their relevance and compliance with the candidate’s level. Test tasks have additional advantages: they provide equal opportunities for extroverts and introverts to demonstrate their expertise, and also eliminate the influence of subjective factors,» the company notes.
On average, Ciklum told dev.ua, completing a test takes less than an hour and allows you to shorten the duration of a technical interview: there, the engineer and interviewer can focus on deeper questions and real cases. «A portfolio or open GitHub are valuable additions to the selection process that can influence the final decision. However, not all candidates have public projects that can be objectively compared in complexity or quality, while test tasks provide equal starting conditions for everyone,» Ciklum is convinced.
In turn, Daryna Kuzmyk, Talent&Culture Lead at Railsware, says that the test task is an integral element of the candidate identification process. «It is always based on real work cases, so it is beneficial for both parties. The team assesses what the specialist is able to do and how he approaches solving the tasks. At the same time, the specialists see what they will be working with and how much our approach resonates with them. So the test also serves as a kind of filter that filters out completely irrelevant candidates,» she says.
That is why Railsware offers tests for any position, whether it is an engineer, a marketer, or an office manager. «Spoiler: they are not voluminous, adequate in terms of time, and completely logical. All because we prepare it according to the level and expectations. In addition, we respect the time and efforts of the searchers. Our guideline for the test is no more than four hours, which we tell the candidates about, and we also provide clear expectations and all the necessary information for preparation,» said Daria.
At the same time, she adds, a simple review of GitHub or a portfolio will not completely replace test tasks. «It will only show how candidates have coped with various challenges in the past and what tasks they solved. Yes, this is a useful filter at the selection stage, which will show that a person has a chance to pass the process. But only a test, designed for our context, will show whether a specialist will fit into our processes and approaches. Candidates themselves will be able to see what to expect from working with us, and compare it with their preferences and capabilities,» Kuzmyk believes.
According to Natalia Yerisova, Head of Global Recruitment at Master of Code Global, the company does not usually practice test tasks for candidates, but there are certain vacancies where the practical part is key. «One of such unique positions we have is Conversation Designer. The test task plays a special role here, because it allows you to see how the candidate thinks, what questions he asks, how he structures the dialogue and creates a user-friendly scenario, as well as how well he is able to work with the tone of the brand, error handling or integration of new technologies. These are the things that cannot be fully assessed only by the portfolio,» she says. The portfolio, says Natalia, is certainly a valuable addition and helps to understand the candidate’s work style, but it does not show how a person approaches a new task here and now.
At Master of Code Global, she said, they view the test not as a barrier, but as an opportunity for the candidate to demonstrate their approach and strengths in conditions as close to reality as possible.
«Of course, I watched this test for free and laughed, let them look for free developers further.» Java Spring Developer showed the test he received when responding to a vacancy. Aitovo residents say that this is a whole startup
«I don’t see the point in calling you. You either do the job or you don’t.» The recruiter refused to discuss the details of the job and immediately provided a test task. Is this the new norm?
Як увійти в IT, якщо не вмієш кодити? Три історії неайтішних спеціалістів з Ciklum, TECHIIA та Intetics
