Ukrainian indie developer Vladislav (TessaraOxygen) is working on a cozy management strategy game called The Headlands, set in a Ukrainian village at the crossroads of two eras — the Soviet legacy and the early 2000s. The author has already implemented a weather system and released a free demo of the project.
The author reported on the updates and development progress on the GamedevDOU forum.
In The Headlands, the player is offered to lead an abandoned farm. The gameplay focuses on slow and thoughtful development: starting with an old tractor and limited resources, you need to cultivate the land, sow grain, control fuel consumption and monitor dynamic market prices for crops.
An important part of the gameplay has become a realistic weather system, which directly affects the operation of the farm.
«I just finished the weather — both visually (5 different weather conditions, street lights and car headlights turn on when visibility is limited) and gameplay — fields grow faster after rain, you can’t harvest in the rain, and all that,» Vladyslav said.
The developer pays special attention to the authenticity of the equipment. Tractors and combines in the game reproduce details, sounds, and features familiar to many from childhood. In addition to the standard fleet, players will be able to cooperate with a mentor mechanic, assemble unique homemade machines, and fulfill contracts for local residents.
