Upskilling and reskilling are key. SoftServe told us what skills a modern IT specialist should have
Yevgeny Udovichenko, manager of educational initiatives at SoftServe, gave advice to future IT professionals on how to enter IT and gain a solid foothold in the industry.
Yevgeny Udovichenko, manager of educational initiatives at SoftServe, gave advice to future IT professionals on how to enter IT and gain a solid foothold in the industry.
According to him, universal skills are important for an IT professional in 2025, regardless of who you want to be — a programmer, tester, DevOps specialist, analyst, or designer. Among them:
Technical thinking is the ability to think logically, analyze problems, and find solutions.
English — almost all large IT companies or startups work with international clients.
Adaptability — in 2025, artificial intelligence is already affecting the labor market, so the ability to quickly master new skills (upskilling and reskilling) is key.
Soft skills — to develop in IT, you need to be able to work in a team, present yourself, and improve business communication skills.
«You also need to look at vacancies on specialized resources to understand what skills are needed for different professions. I recommend watching videos of practicing specialists — they tell you what to learn and how to develop,» notes Yevhenii in a blog on the osvita.ua website.
He also recommends using specific resources with roadmaps (learning paths) to help you understand what you need to know to get started. «And of course, ChatGPT and other AI assistants are great learning aids, try asking questions like ‘How do I become a front-end developer?’» the expert adds.
For beginners to gain experience, he advises the following:
look for courses and training initiatives in collaboration with IT companies.
do internships and student practices — many companies offer programs for students that allow them to work on real projects;
Develop volunteering and your own projects: in the IT sphere there is a concept of pet projects, when a specialist implements an idea for himself or tries to make an analogue of some service. This will help to better understand how complex systems are built. You can also join volunteer initiatives or participate in hackathons.
Yevgeny emphasizes that while artificial intelligence does perform some routine tasks (for example, helping to write code or generate test data), it is the person who determines which tasks can be delegated to AI, how to check the result, and what to do in case of an error. Therefore, high-quality technical education remains a reliable foundation for professional development.
Vice President of HR at SoftServe: «Paradoxically, the most important thing we need right now is to „learn to unlearn,“ to clean our memory files and write new information there, to think differently.»
«Juni and Midli lost to artificial intelligence. I see no arguments for hiring novice specialists.» Senior Software Engineer believes that AI can replace young IT professionals. Does the community agree with his arguments: a big debate
