Elon Musk’s company claims that Lee copied documents from xAI’s laptop onto at least one of his personal devices. According to the lawsuit, Lee stole «advanced artificial intelligence technology with features that surpass those offered by ChatGPT and other competing products,» Engadget reports.
xAI believes that this confidential information could give competing companies in the artificial intelligence market a potential advantage and «could save OpenAI and other competitors billions of dollars in research and development and years of engineering effort.» The company that developed the chatbot, Grok, accused Lee of making efforts to «hide his violation,» including renaming files, compressing them before downloading them to his personal devices, and deleting his browser history.
The lawsuit also alleges that Lee asked xAI to buy back the company’s stock that was given to him as part of his compensation package, totaling approximately $7 million, before leaving the company to join OpenAI. xAI is asking the court for a temporary restraining order that would force its former employee to give up access to any personal devices or online storage services and return all confidential materials to the company.
In addition, xAI wants to temporarily ban Li from working at OpenAI or any other competing company until the company restores all of its trade secrets.
