Test task developer

Yevhenii Popadiuk, Java Spring Developer, told how he received a strange offer — supposedly development, but not software. «The dialogue of the week just took place, you can sit down,» the specialist wrote and further quoted a dialogue with a representative of the employer.

HR: Good afternoon, you applied for the position of Java developer, tell us about yourself.
Eugene talks about himself.
HR: We are looking for a candidate without work experience, this is currently one of the requirements
Evgeny: Great, I’m looking for experience!
HR: Okay, okay, you will be assigned to a manager, check the hard and soft skills of candidates, and develop test tasks. Tell me, are you satisfied with such conditions?
Yevgeny: I apologize, please repeat, are you offering me development, or creating test cases for potential candidates and recruiting?
HR:Development
Evgeny: Developing test tasks sounds like recruiting.
HR: These are the conditions of the vacancy, so we are looking for people without experience
Eugene: Good evening 🤠

«I’ll leave the breaking up of this gorgeous dialogue to those who see it, but that’s half the trouble. The other half is that someone will definitely go there and create test tasks for you, us, without experience, and recruit you, us.»
The trend is actually expected, given the number of graduates of all kinds of course factories for all tastes in life, and the factor that ATS in one form or another replaces default, if you can call it that, recruiters with those who are at least a little technically savvy,» the IT expert noted. In his opinion, the valuable acquisition of such a level of specialists is, of course, questionable and open to question, but this is already a trend.

Eggs as a bonus

«Recruiters without balls, don’t write to me. Recruiters, without balls, don’t write to me,» Middle SEO copywriter Anastasia Malaman jokingly wrote on LinkedIn, adding a screenshot from Threads to the post. It shows an interesting list of options for a potential employee.

Test size with startup

UI/UX Designer Igor Dmytrivo published a screenshot of a test task from Chili Labs, which he compared to a good startup. «Have you ever encountered such test tasks? In fact, to put it briefly and in a nutshell, it’s a full-fledged app with all the research that the company offers me to do even without a preliminary interview. Seriously? And how much free work do they collect online, I wonder? It turns out to be a good startup,» he noted .

The specialist wrote to the employer that such a task could not be completed without payment. To which the company probably responded with a prepared script about the development of design thinking and the approach to solving the problem in the task.

«It either doesn’t suit you or you don’t understand it»

Career consultant Maria Ivantsiv published a fragment of a recruiter’s correspondence with a candidate, in which the hiring specialist interrupts communication with a potential employee because of a completely logical question about work schedules and pay for work that is not specified in the job description.

«The candidate asked about the schedule and salary, and the answer was this,» she wrote and posted a screenshot from Threads.

CRM for scam offices against the Russian Federation

Developer Yevheniy Popadiuk said that while looking for a job, he has come across vacancies for offices for the fifth time in two weeks.

«I thought about not writing about this, but I’ll write it anyway. I’m looking for a job, and for the fifth time in two weeks I’ve been offered to write CRM for scam offices against the Russian Federation. Without testing, without technical stages, without a circus of strained HR smiles. They even offer decent money. The only caveat is moving to Lviv, which I can’t do right now,» the specialist wrote .

The position, according to him, has been open for the second week.

«What’s the point of all this? And besides, if such an approach were in outsourcing/product companies, at least 30%, we would hardly be talking about „there is work, there is no one to work for, I want a senior for $500, Juns are garbage and so on“. They will definitely find someone for themselves, and on LinkedIn we will see another „I’m starting to work in NDA“. Meanwhile, on Djinnia, the same Jun positions are regularly opened and closed once a month, because a plastic resume and a plastic smile for HR are the most important priority among all priorities. Somewhere it all went wrong, very wrong,» the developer thinks.

Test the app for Katsurin

Restaurateur Misha Katsurin has posted a vacancy for a personal assistant, in which the candidate must be able to do, if not everything, then almost everything. In particular, test the application. «In my opinion, ‘testing the application’ is a job for QA, ‘registering an LLC’ is a job for a lawyer, banking and financial issues are for an accountant. Will one person be able to combine all these roles?
«And will such multitasking be a plus for productivity?» ponders Software QA Engineer Anastasia Dyka, who shared the screenshot. By the way, there are over 100 comments from community members under her post.

«Attention, a joke!»

And here’s another vacancy from Popadiuk — with a test task for the position of developer with over a year of experience and a salary of 15,000–25,000 UAH.

«Attention, anecdote. Test for java junior with a salary of 15-25k. 1+ year of experience. There was a questionnaire with the question „are you ready to work for a % of completed tasks?“
And, of course, this test account with the Telegram API connected automatically replied to me, neither hello nor „hello“, keep the vehicle,» he said .

The developer was not at a loss. «Of course, I watched this test for free and laughed, let them look for free developers further, but still, when did this become the norm?» the IT expert asked the community.

There is a lively discussion under Yevheniy’s post. Aitovites are surprised, call the task a «ready-made startup,» and urge not to complete free test tasks, wondering how long it would take to implement such a project.

Ultimatum from the recruiter

IT Project Manager Konstantin Latoshkin was contacted by a recruiter from a company that urgently needed a PM for the weekend. Although he has a permanent job, he was curious about what kind of «weekend» job this was. Instead of providing more information about the vacancy and finding out if the candidate was suitable, the recruiter immediately sent the task. The people of Aitivka began to discuss this case lively and share their own experiences.

«I became curious: what the company does, what projects, what culture, what kind of team. I am open to dialogue — I think we will exchange contacts, make the first short call. But instead… They just sent me a test task. No conversation. No details. No understanding whether it is relevant to me at all,» Konstantin Latoshkin shared on LinkedIn.

I wrote: «It would be good to first get to know each other, understand more about the vacancy and the company. And only then decide whether it is advisable to perform the task.»

But the recruiter replied bluntly: «I don’t see the point in calling you. You either complete the task or you don’t. All the information is in it.»

After this answer, Konstantin wondered if it was really «2025»? Is it normal to ignore basic «person-to-person» communication?

«This is a f*ck, not just a bad experience»

In August, AI/ML Engineer Dmytro Goncharenko gave many interviews. But one of them, according to the IT engineer, will be remembered for a long time.

«After they found me on Djinni, they wrote on Telegram — it’s fine for me. But — let’s start our „buts“,» wrote Dmytro Goncharenko on LinkedIn. First, according to him, the invitation to the interview 2 hours before the start. «They wrote at 9, with an invitation for 11. Maybe I’m used to cool recruiters who give me the choice to choose the day and time myself or at least the day in advance, but two hours before — sorry, this is completely unprofessional,» noted the IT guy.

Secondly, a question in the style of «What if there is a conflict?» ««What if the developer makes a mistake?»» — answers the old questions «If you get into a blender — what will you do?». The only question arises: what do you have there, daily battles and an apocalypse? And in general, this particular stage of the interview was very «squeezed»,» added Dmytro.

Thirdly, feedback generated by AI. «After the interview, they rejected me, which is OK. But when I asked, 'Tell me why you didn’t get the job?' I was simply given a response from the GPT chat without a conclusion/final opinion on why you didn’t get the job, but with a list of 'what’s a plus' and 'what could be improved',» the IT specialist explained.

Fourthly, after three weeks, a message with a refusal came again. «After three weeks, they reminded me again and responded with a refusal again, but already on Djinni… THREE WEEKS after CARL, after the first refusal. Apparently, their system is so worried that I don’t doubt my refusal. A reminder so that I don’t forget that they didn’t take me? Thanks, I remembered.»

Ivan Nikolenko, Senior Front-End/Full-Stack Developer, said that he gets a lot of rejections because he lives in Ukraine. Even when he indicates another country, the employer, after checking his LinkedIn profile, refuses, explaining this by the fact that the man lives in Ukraine.

«Recently, I have had 80% of such rejections,» Ivan wrote. For the sake of experiment, Aitivets names other countries, including exotic ones, when asked by recruiters. He published a screenshot where he indicated the country of residence as Paraguay.

«I’m already a fan. Before that, there were Chad, Mali, Botswana. A colleague suggested trying the fictional „Zakovia“ and „Krakozhia“. They were normal. Immediately interested, even if I live in Somalia and pirate some ship. The main thing is not in our Potuzhnoslav,» the specialist notes.

The developer notes: if you immediately write Kyiv, after 5 minutes you will receive a rejection with phrases like «not suitable for skills», «not suitable for technologies», etc.

«Being a Ukrainian developer in Potuzhnoslav now means being the most canceled specialist in the world. This is when everyone has canceled you. Both abroad and at home, and even the old lady on the bench is constantly sending you somewhere and calling you a sucker,» Ivan notes.

«If you don’t have a reprieve, you’re trash»

UX/UI Designer Ivan Pokazka noticed that employers are increasingly interested in whether candidates have a deferral. This outraged the specialist, and his post sparked a discussion on LinkedIn.

«Don’t you have a deferment? You’re trash… This is how I perceive a candidate’s rejection at an interview when the company finds out that he doesn’t have a deferment or grounds for one. This is not the first time I’ve noticed such a trend in companies both in the domestic market and in international ones. Is business not ready to take responsibility? Is this a new filter in society? It seems like it’s time to write in your profile header: „I HAVE A DEFERMENT“ if you want to work and eat…», Ivan expressed himself emotionally.

According to him, employers do not ask about the presence of a military registration document, but rather about the presence of a deferment or the right to it.

Fifty experts commented on his post. Not everyone agrees with the writer’s rhetoric.

«Instead of mobilization, remote work»

React/Next.js/TS developer Anatoliy Yakovenko published a screenshot of a developer vacancy in which the employer directly calls the possibility of remote work an insurance against mobilization. At the same time, the developer is promised very little money.

«As the times go, so do the vacancies… Frontend vacancy for 12,000 UAH, it says Jun +/ Middle, but the description says student. And what’s next?! Sugar corn 100 UAH, honey baklava 150 UAH, frontendeeer 50 UAH/hour?» he asked and added a screenshot.
