During 2024, the audience of the Bluesky social network grew from 2.89 million to 25.94 million users, i.e., it increased 9 times.
This is stated in the Bluesky report on content moderation issues for 2024, posted on the company’s official website.
«To meet the needs of our growing user base, we have expanded our team of moderators to approximately 100 and continue to hire more staff. Some moderators specialize in specific areas of our policies, such as child safety. Our team of moderators works 24/7 and reviews user reports 24/7. This is a challenging job, as moderators are constantly exposed to graphic content,» the report states.
The company said that in early September 2024, they began providing psychological counseling for the moderation team to «ease the burden of viewing this content.»
In 2024, users submitted 6.48 million reports to the Bluesky moderation service, which is 17 times more than in 2023.
As the document notes, the company already had automated spam detection technology, but invested even more resources in automating more report categories so that its moderation team could quickly review suspicious or problematic content.
The social network also recorded 1.75 million cases of antisocial behavior during 2024 — reports of harassment, trolling, or intolerance.
1.2 million posts contained misleading content: impersonation, misinformation, or false statements.
As for plans for 2025, Bluesky intends to invest in more powerful proactive systems for detecting harmful content. They also promise to publish a draft of updated community guidelines in the first quarter of the year.
Also, in 2025, the social network promises to move to responding to moderation reports directly in the Bluesky application, which will simplify communication with users.
«In addition, in a future iteration, users will be able to appeal account deletions directly in the Bluesky app instead of sending us an email,» they noted.
In 2024, Bluesky moderators removed a total of 66,308 accounts.
As dev.ua wrote, Bluesky was launched by former Twitter CEO and co-founder Jack Dorsey. Only in February 2024 did the social network become available to everyone. The number of users of the platform has been growing rapidly recently due to the migration of X users after the US elections. At the same time, the Kremlin bot farm has already reached the social network.
