According to a new scheme, scammers hack Instagram accounts using hate comments under a post. How does this happen and are they always written in Russian?
Video blogger, writer, and founder of the volunteer initiative «How Not to Become a Vegetable» Oksana Moroz shared how scammers began hacking Instagram accounts using hate in the comments.
Video blogger, writer, and founder of the volunteer initiative «How Not to Become a Vegetable» Oksana Moroz shared how scammers began hacking Instagram accounts using hate in the comments.
«A new-old story that ends with a break or other damage,» Oksana Moroz wrote on Facebook.
According to her, the scheme works as follows:
Under the post (mostly on Instagram), the user can see an outrageous comment about themselves. «Usually, in Russian (but not a fact),» the writer emphasizes.
The user goes to see who wrote it.
On the other side, he sees a closed account and there is only one link (for example, to Telegram).
Clicking on something there should once again emotionally engage the user and motivate them to click on the second link.
Then there is account hacking, fraud, etc.

«Please do not click on such comments/accounts/links,» urges Oksana Moroz.
In the comments to the writer’s post, many other users confirmed that they had encountered or seen similar cases.
Referring to a separate comment by Oksana Moroz, the Institute of Mass Information writes that the goals of hacking accounts can be different: now the account is being hacked using a link, and then they can change it to collect information.
Blogger Maya Tulchynska told about a case where she herself encountered a similar situation. According to her, scammers send bots to people’s pages with the task of writing nasty things about the author of the page, even without political messages or a link to the topic of a specific post.
To protect yourself, Maya advises: if you are not engaged in any public activity on social networks, if you do not have a professional need for comments to be open, limit them to friends only. If someone does reach out to you with a nasty comment that goes to a person, make sure it is not a bot.
