An ex-machine gunner, a veteran, and now a Frontend developer, Denys Sheremeta told how, after rehabilitating after an injury, he managed to find a job in a new field in just 9 days.
«On February 23, 2022, I celebrated my 32nd birthday. The next day, with the beginning of a full-scale invasion, he reassured and prepared his family, and on the morning of February 25, he voluntarily came to the military commissariat, leaving his profession as a computer science and music teacher at the local lyceum. This is how my military career began, which I now continue as a veteran,» Denis writes in a column on UP.Zhyttia.
The man’s first month of service was spent in his hometown of Sokyryana, Chernivtsi region, as part of a guard company. Then Denys was selected for the newly created 37th separate rifle battalion, and he ended up on the border of the Sumy region.
«Among the things I took with me to the service was a flute. Since I was fond of music since childhood and even had my own band until the beginning of 2022, I tried to cheer myself up and my brothers and sisters whenever possible. In Sumy Oblast, he even somehow managed to get a saxophone from the locals,» says the resident of Aitiv.
At the beginning of 2023, Denis’s unit was transferred to the Bakhmut direction. There, as part of the machine gun calculation, he worked on the Browning M2.
In the battles for the Bakhmut-Slovyansk highway, near the settlement of Krasna Gora, a man received a shrapnel wound and a contusion. During the treatment, he resigned from the service due to family reasons.
After an injury and a difficult period of rehabilitation, Denys became interested in Frontend development. «Probably re-read all possible open sources — it helped a lot to find a focus and a new meaning. I had no fairy-tale ideas that I would instantly „get into IT“. I communicated with acquaintances who have been involved in development for many years, understood the market and requirements, so I formed adequate expectations — it will be difficult and long,» says Denys.
The deeper the man immersed himself in the development, the more he understood that he would not be able to master everything necessary, even for the first job, on his own.
«Then I started to analyze opportunities where you can study systematically, and came across full-time studies from Mate academy. When I found out about their free program for war veterans, all the pieces came together,» the man says.
Denys describes the situation on the labor market as follows: «Employers are looking for a prince on a white horse, and workers are looking for an ideal place where they are paid millions and do not have to do anything.» So he prepared for a lengthy job search process, but in the end it only took 9 days. He considers it luck.
«I had no special criteria for choosing a company. Having already joined my current team, I realized that the atmosphere in the team should come first. Fortunately, I was very lucky with my colleagues,» Denys shares.
Now my husband is engaged in frontend development and helps clients realize the appearance of the final product.
Denys admits that I did not advertise my military experience when I was looking for a job. «When my current colleagues found out, they said they were proud that I was in their team. I can’t speak for everyone, but veterans in difficult circumstances have acquired very useful skills — resilience, adaptability, leadership, coordinated teamwork. Such specialists will definitely make the team stronger, they just need to be taught,» he believes.
