"The same people who brewed mivina for lunch and one tea bag three times a day are now indignantly asking why there is no almond milk in the office." ІТ-workers debate whether prestigious work changes people
Senior Project & Product Manager Maksym Nazarenko shared his thoughts on whether working in the IT sector changes people, their requirements, and their perspective on things.
Senior Project & Product Manager Maksym Nazarenko shared his thoughts on whether working in the IT sector changes people, their requirements, and their perspective on things.
«I don’t overeat. I’m always happy with tasteless coffee and cheap cookies in the office. Because I remember unloading trucks at the market. The coffee was from a bag. And there were no cookies at all. Today, IT has benefits, care, work-life balance. And that’s great. But sometimes I catch myself thinking: the same people like me, who not long ago brewed a cup of coffee for lunch and one bag of tea three times a day, now ask with indignation why there is no almond milk in the office», — the IT worker noted.
He made it clear that many colleagues in the industry, who until recently lived modestly or even poorly, having received prestigious jobs, forgot about their past.
On his LinkedIn page, Maksym Nazarenko emphasized that worrying about yourself is normal, but «we need to remember where we came from.»
«IT changes people. The only question is — in which direction?», — the Senior Project & Product Manager ended his post with a rhetorical question.
Other stories of «hard times»
In response to Maksym Nazarenko’s post, many representatives of the IT community also recalled the times of youth, lack of money, and the first, far from the most prestigious jobs. At the same time, many disagreed with the author of the post regarding his vision.
System Administrator Konstantin Prokhorov noted that he currently sees nothing wrong with self-love, and recalled how he previously worked as a third-category electrician for linear communication and broadcasting facilities.
«I drank tea from tea bags, ate sandwiches that I brought to work, or sipped wine, sitting in the basement of the telephone exchange. I wandered around the city center with a two-meter ladder on my shoulder and a bag with tools, climbed this ladder onto attics and roofs in 40-degree heat. I held „rallies“ with inadequate subscribers not through a technical support headset, but face2face. It was fun, carefree and interesting. But that time has passed, „time has flown, but my hands are clean“. Comfortable working conditions are taken for granted,» Prokhorov expressed his opinion in the comments.
Senior QA Automation Engineer Oleksiy Natoloka agreed with the author of the post that the situations he described look really funny. In his opinion, if employees start «whining about some nonsense like food,» then they should be forcibly sent on vacation, or even fired from the team altogether.
«A long time ago, back in the early 2000s, I started practicing and working in the engine shop of a bus fleet. Every morning there was a planning meeting, where everyone was paid a pittance. I worked with mature men who had extensive experience in repairing buses, but no desire to work. Their motivation completely disappeared when alcohol appeared. Then their work completely stopped. But when something urgent arose, or a hackneyed job, the work was in full swing. So what’s the point of me: those who are really worth something and make a big contribution to the project have the right to burn out,» Natoloka shared his position.
«The ability to eat or wear clothes is not a luxury»
Senior Test Engineer Ostap Zamora emphasized that he looks at the situation from a slightly different angle.
«The ability to eat or dress is not a luxury. The fact that total poverty is the norm for us is not something to be proud of. At one time, there was no thought of taxis or cars, and McCafé was also drunk, but the middle class is people with savings, their own housing or the ability to rent, who do not look into the grocery basket. This is the middle class, not luxury. The fact that they look richer in the background does not make them rich,» the IT expert emphasized.
QA Engineer Maksym Borisov believes that good work in the IT sector actually changes people for the better.
«People are starting to value themselves, people are starting to demand better. First, better sweets and coffee, and then, maybe, the time will come for better politicians,» the IT specialist added.
Head of QA Rina U. reminded colleagues that people get used to the good very quickly and adapt to the bad, and this is actually one of their strongest points.
«So it doesn’t matter what happened before, it doesn’t matter what is happening now or will happen. What’s important is that you were okay with it all at that moment. That’s all. Everyone has different experiences. You should only compare your own with yourself. Both good and bad,» the specialist believes.
We also recently wrote about whether IT professionals are willing to work for significantly lower salaries than they expected. In particular, Frontend Developer Serhiy Belyakov faced salary dumping from his employer and decided to discuss this topic with the community.
«I found my soulmate at work, where company policy forbade it. HR regularly reminded me that it was a violation of the rules.» Are relationships at work acceptable? Digital specialists and IT professionals debate
«I take my words back. I’m a prompt programmer 90% of the time. It’s not funny anymore.» A programmer who previously didn’t believe that most code would be written by AI admitted that he was wrong. Aitovo residents discuss
«A red flag the size of a small European country.» Aitovo residents discuss whether it makes sense to immediately complete the test task without a preliminary interview
