Last year, Amazon mandated that its employees spend five days a week in the office, and now managers have the ability to identify employees who aren’t meeting those expectations.
The updated dashboard, which went live in December, lets managers and HR departments see how often employees come into the office, how long they stay there, and where they work. It updates daily at 5 p.m. and shows data for the past eight weeks.
The system distinguishes three types of employees:
«These metrics are designed to identify employees who deviate significantly from documented expectations for office performance,» the document states.
Amazon notes in the document that disciplinary action is at the discretion of managers.
The company has previously cracked down on employees who only show up to «have coffee.» Managers have told some teams that they must be in the office for a minimum of two to six hours in order for their office time to count. The measures have drawn criticism from some employees, who say they are being treated «like schoolchildren.»
Amazon positions the dashboard as a means to encourage personal collaboration.
«Working in the office is important to our culture and means more than just being physically present during the week,» the company notes.
It was previously reported that Microsoft has decided to bring employees back to the office for at least three days a week. The policy will take effect from the end of February 2026 and will be implemented in stages.
