Apple postpones iPhone Air 2 release until 2027 and cuts production of current model

Apple has delayed the second-generation iPhone Air until at least 2027, while simultaneously cutting production of the current «ultra-thin» Air. The decision is related to weaker-than-expected demand and the need to reallocate resources to higher-priority models.
According to The Information, the company has halted plans for a fall 2026 release of the iPhone Air 2 and is reducing production orders for the first Air. Internally, Apple has been testing updates with a larger battery, lighter weight, and a vapor chamber cooling system similar to those found in flagships, but the model’s weak start and more complex supply chains have forced it to reconsider its roadmap.
The updated schedule focuses on the 2026 lineup, where the main new products remain the iPhone 18 Pro and the first foldable iPhone. The base iPhone 18 and the compact iPhone 18e are currently scheduled to be released in spring 2027, giving Apple additional time for engineering improvements and balancing production workloads.
At the same time, the idea of an «ultra-thin» Air is not considered completely closed: the Cupertino company is considering a «window» of March-April 2027 for a possible return of the model after refinements. This approach indicates a pragmatic adjustment of the portfolio: first prove the heat-energy balance and user value, and only then scale the design, which requires compromises between thickness, autonomy and heat dissipation.
The first iPhone Air was launched in September 2025 as a design alternative to the classic models, but initial demand did not meet expectations. The current decision seems to be an attempt to focus on form factors with proven commercial impact (primarily the Pro series and the new foldable form factor) and return to the Air concept when engineering and manufacturing risks are minimized.
Previously, dev.ua wrote about how Apple will celebrate its 50th anniversary in April 2026. The company expects a holiday quarter with revenue of up to $139 billion, which could be the first $140 billion quarter in history.
