Capterra closed access to Ukrainian users, explaining this by the "geopolitical situation"
Users from Ukraine can no longer access Capterra, a platform for searching, comparing, and evaluating B2B software owned by the American company Gartner. The reason for the blocking is the war in Ukraine.
Users from Ukraine can no longer access Capterra, a platform for searching, comparing, and evaluating B2B software owned by the American company Gartner. The reason for the blocking is the war in Ukraine.
According to DOU, the CEO of one of the Ukrainian IT companies, which has been actively using the service for nine years, spoke about the restrictions. According to him, the platform is currently not open from Ukrainian IP addresses, and blocking is carried out through Cloudflare. In a letter from Capterra support, they explained that the decision to temporarily stop working with Ukrainian companies is dictated by the «current international landscape.»
«We have made the difficult decision to refrain from providing access to Ukrainian companies… This has nothing to do with the quality of your services,» the support service said in a response. The company has not yet provided an official public comment.
At the time of publication, it is unknown whether the restrictions affected Russian users — journalists were able to access the site with a Russian VPN. Members of the Ukrainian IT community suggest that the blocking may affect not only access, but also page rankings in search results.
Why is this important?
Capterra was actively used by Ukrainian developers, in particular to promote their products, collect feedback, and increase customer trust. For example, the interlocutor’s company had over 200 positive reviews on the platform. Restricting access deprives Ukrainian teams of an important marketing and analytics channel, as well as the opportunity to navigate the global software market.
The company is one of the world’s largest business software selection services, allowing users to filter, compare, and review thousands of applications. The company is part of Gartner, a global research and consulting firm. The platform is particularly important for SaaS companies and startups that are promoting their products in the global market.
As a reminder, we also published an article about how Anthropic terminated OpenAI’s access to the API of its AI model Claude. The reason was the alleged use of the tool to create a competing product, which contradicts the terms of service.
