According to TechCrunch, after its launch, the Grokipedia project attracted attention because some of the materials looked like paraphrases or close copies of Wikipedia articles, but at the same time, texts with problematic theses appeared — in particular, about the alleged contribution of pornography to the HIV/AIDS crisis, attempts to ideologically justify slavery, and derogatory definitions of transgender people.
The publication says that Grokipedia was cited in GPT-5.2's answers nine times across more than a dozen questions. The links appeared not where Grokipedia’s errors were most commonly discussed publicly, but in less well-known topics where it is more difficult for a user to immediately assess the reliability of the source. Examples include claims about historian Sir Richard Evans that have previously been refuted in the media.
OpenAI, in a comment on the situation, noted that the company strives to use a wide range of publicly available sources and different points of view. At the same time, the Grokipedia case again raises a practical question for the user: the presence of a link in the chatbot’s response can create a sense of reliability, even if the source already has a problematic reputation.
Grokipedia is an automatically generated encyclopedia in the xAI ecosystem, which appeared against the backdrop of discussions about Wikipedia’s bias. Public complaints about the project concerned two things: first, the similarity of some of the materials to Wikipedia texts. Second, the appearance in some articles of statements that the media called inaccurate or manipulative. That is why its appearance among the sources cited by the popular chatbot is important: it affects which texts receive additional distribution through AI responses.
