"Why are companies willing to pay new employees more than old ones?" Recruiter and IT community tried to find an answer to this question
Senior Global Recruiter/Career Coach Anastasia Andrushchenko raised the question of why, from the employer’s point of view, he would be willing to pay a higher salary to a new specialist than to a specialist with similar experience who has been working in the company for a long time.
Senior Global Recruiter/Career Coach Anastasia Andrushchenko raised the question of why, from the employer’s point of view, he would be willing to pay a higher salary to a new specialist than to a specialist with similar experience who has been working in the company for a long time.
«I’ve always been tormented by this question, and it was with it that I linked my observation that people try to change their jobs every two years. I think that more often it’s the financial motivation, because the new company will pay more. I’ve done that too, and more than once,» she explains on her LinkedIn page.
The recruiter identified at least three reasons for this employer’s behavior:
Fresh ideas and perspectives
«New employees bring new ideas, solutions, market visions, and approaches to work. They become a kind of „breath of fresh air“ that can change the dynamics in the company and help it adapt to modern challenges,» Andrushchenko expresses his vision.
Lack of growth and development
«Sometimes 'old' employees stop in their development, remaining at the same level. In such cases, the company is looking for new people who have modern skills and are ready for challenges,» the recruiter concludes.
Inadequate adaptation to change
«The market is changing rapidly, and companies need to adapt. „Senior“ employees are not always ready to quickly change their habits or approaches, while new people come with the necessary adaptability and understanding of new trends. For example, I had an experience when, after the introduction of a new CRM, 2 employees left because they did not want to master the system, they were comfortable working in spreadsheets,» said the Senior Global Recruiter/Career Coach.
In the comments to Anastasia Andrushchenko’s post, AIT residents expressed their views on this issue.
Java/Scala Developer Viktor Koshevoy doubts that this situation is a clearly defined trend, rather than isolated cases.
«If we had statistics where we could see that this is systematic, that in 70-90% of hiring cases this is exactly what happens, then yes. But perhaps we are simply talking about situations that arise just like others,» he expressed his doubts.
Digital marketer Victoria Rodina, in turn, believes that by offering a higher salary to a new employee, the employer is also forced to adapt to the market.
«If the salary for finding a new specialist has become higher, then you have to pay more. And you can pay „old“ employees less, especially if they don’t ask for it themselves. Why overpay,» she explains the employer’s potential logic.
According to Rodina, who cited, in particular, the example of her husband, an Haitian, «older» employees should ask for a raise, and not wait for the initiative from management in this matter.
«I judge from my husband’s experience. He has been working in a large company for over 10 years. And his salary has only been reviewed three times,» she said.
Victoria Rodina notes that in the post-Soviet space, employers rarely have the desire to motivate employees with a salary increase without their independent request. «In my 8 years of work, only one company has thrown money at me,» Rodina explained.
HRD Iryna Shulyarenko believes that from the employer’s point of view, an «old» employee will not go anywhere anyway.
«When he 'disappears', they are very surprised and hire two for a higher salary. Usually it’s a misunderstanding of labor market prices + overconfidence,» she expresses her opinion.
