Discord is beta testing a new in-game currency that can be exchanged for digital items. Users will earn Orbs by completing promotional quests on the platform and can spend them on items and Nitro premium subscriptions.
The Verge notes that in-app ad quests are a previous Discord initiative that rewards members for engaging with advertiser content, whether it’s watching trailers, playing certain games, or broadcasting them to friends.
Users can spend Orbs on regular items in the Discord store, as well as exchange digital tokens for exclusives like special badges or 3-day passes to try out the Discord Nitro subscription.
Discord believes that users will be able to flexibly use the currency to obtain various rewards, «making quests even more interesting.» For advertisers, Orbs make it easier to launch campaigns because they no longer need to create rewards.
Discord may have plans to introduce its own virtual currency that can be earned by completing quests and possibly other things like gifting Nitro, boosting a server, and being a long-term Nitro subscriber. It is noted that the new currency is available worldwide, but to a «small number» of users before wider testing. In the future, the platform developers promise new ways to earn rewards with Orbs, and better rewards and offers for Nitro subscribers.
