Almost 4% of children in Ukraine have received photos or videos of their naked bodies, even though they did not take them. What else do children suffer from online?

Proinsight lab conducted a study on the experiences of sexual violence and sexual exploitation online among Ukrainian middle and high school-age children (10-17 years old). How often do children encounter such situations?

About the research

Respondents: middle and high school age children (10-17 years old) who attend school, have access to the Internet, and use the network at least once a week.

Children were interviewed during the period from September 9, 2024 to November 15, 2024.

A total of 1,799 respondents were interviewed (the expected number of respondents was 1,500).

According to the analytical report presented by the company based on the results of the study, the majority of children surveyed, namely 95,7%, use the Internet almost every day.

Three quarters of children spend more than 3 hours online every day. The vast majority of children prefer Youtube (87.7%), Telegram (85%), TikTok (83%), Viber (81.7%), Instagram (63.3%).

Regarding the unpleasant content and situations that children encounter online, researchers found that:

  1. From 2,2% to 6% of children see at least one type of sexual content almost every day.
  2. Social networks are the source from which the vast majority of children (80.7%) first see content with violence or cruelty.
  3. Violent content mainly causes anxiety (45.5%), fear (41.9%), and anger (40.1%) in children.
  4. The largest number of children received questions with sexual overtones (19.7%), met in person with a stranger from the Internet (18.1%), and received a photo or video of someone else’s naked body (13.2%).
  5. Girls are more likely to be asked to send photos or videos of themselves naked several times a year, while there are more boys who have never been in such a situation.
  6. Almost 2% of children aged 14 to 17 were offered online sex (via webcam) at least once a week.
  7. There are more girls than boys who have not had online sex at all.
  8. Among younger children, there were significantly fewer people who were sent photos or videos of their naked bodies, even though they did not take the photos. While among older children, there were more people with whom this happened once a week or more often. Similar situations occurred more often with children from rural areas than with city dwellers, and there were no differences by gender.
  9. 11.5% of children aged 14 to 17 have talked about sex with a stranger online at least a few times a year.
  10. Among children from the city, there are more who were blackmailed at least once a month, threatening to distribute photos and/or videos of their naked bodies if they did not do something they were asked to do.
