What to watch for IT specialists over the holidays: 5 technology-related films released in 2025

A selection of films from 2025 about androids, the dangers of AI technologies, an IT professional’s fight for justice, and a programmer’s Christmas project that turned into a global phenomenon.

1. The Companion

It’s like an episode of Black Mirror, only stretched into a full-length film about an android, AI, and the dangers of technology.

Genre: Science fiction thriller. According to critics, the film has a controversial combination of horror and comedy elements.

Country: USA.

Director: Drew Hancock.

Starring: Sophie Thatcher, Jack Quaid, Lucas Gage, Harvey Gillen, Rupert Friend.

Iris and Josh have been inseparable since they met at the supermarket. Together with their friends, they come to a luxurious lakeside country estate of a billionaire friend to spend the weekend there. However, Iris believes that she is not liked by Josh’s friends, which makes her feel superfluous in the company. And this feeling is intensified when a terrible event soon occurs, as a result of which a disturbing truth about herself and the world around her is revealed.

2. The Amateur

With no combat experience or outstanding physical strength, a CIA IT specialist uses only his sharp mind and knowledge of technology to eliminate his wife’s killers.

Genre: spy thriller.

Country: USA.

Director: James Goose.

Cast: Rami Malek, Laurence Fishburne, Rachel Brosnagen, Jon Bernthal.

Codebreaker Charles Geller decides to take justice into his own hands after his superiors at the CIA refuse to respond to the death of his wife during a terrorist attack in London. Threatening to expose the covert operations, the enraged IT guy forces his superiors to teach him the skills of a hitman so he can track down and eliminate his wife’s killers on his own. To achieve his goal, the tech genius easily turns code into a weapon, hacks systems, and covers his tracks.

3. Python: The Documentary

A programmer’s Christmas project.

Genre: documentary.

Production: Produced by CultRepo and directed by Ida Bechtle.

Starring: Guido van Rossum, Travis Oliphant, Barry Warsaw, Mariatta Vijaya

Dutch programmer Guido van Rossum invented Python during his Christmas break in 1989. But it wasn’t really a sudden burst of IT genius, but the result of 3.5 years of prior work on a now-defunct project.

Through interviews with key actors, the film chronicles the journey of Python from a small hobby project to a global phenomenon through the prism of trial, error, crises, and development.

The film is available in English on YouTube .

4. M3GAN 2.0/M3GAN 2.0

The film raises topics about the ethics of artificial intelligence and parenting in the digital world.

Genre: science fiction action movie.

Jemma, a computer science genius and robot designer, must resurrect M3GAN to confront Amelia, a new, improved version of the military android created using her technology stolen by a defense contractor.

Now it’s a story about a duel between two androids with artificial intelligence: M3GAN, who has become faster, stronger, and even more deadly, and Amelia, who has lost control of the program and poses a threat to the entire world.

5. The Electric State

The story centers on an orphaned girl, Michelle, who one day discovers that the consciousness of her missing genius brother resides in a robot modeled after the once-popular cartoon character Cosmo. A series of clues lead her to search for him in a forbidden place called the Exclusion Zone. Joined on the journey by a smuggler and his robot assistant, Michelle realizes that the forces behind her brother’s disappearance are far more sinister than she could have imagined.
