«Many people think that companies don’t hire in the fourth quarter. This is not entirely true. Yes, the end of the year is difficult for startups — they have to show investors a profit. But in large corporations, on the contrary, there is often pressure on managers: to have time to close vacancies before budgets or headcount are reduced,» Business Insider quotes the expert.
Here are four tips that, in Sarah’s opinion, will be the key to a successful offer even at the end of the year.
Clearly define your role and positioning
You need to understand what exactly you are looking for. Not just «what kind of job do I want,» but where the following intersect:
your level (junior, middle, senior),
your specialization,
market needs.
The more specific you are, the easier it will be for the employer to understand your value.
Choose a narrow focus instead of «shooting everywhere»
Mass mailing of resumes doesn’t work. It’s better to submit fewer applications, but in a very targeted manner. Make a list of companies you’re interested in and set up job alerts for them to respond quickly.
«If you try to please everyone, you end up being liked by no one,» explains Gus.
Go back to companies where you were already close to hiring
If you’ve had interviews before and didn’t get an offer, it’s not the end. The end of the year is the perfect time to remind yourself.
Write to the recruiter: «We spoke about the role of [X] in [season]. I have grown professionally since then, and I would like to be considered again. If you do not hold this position, I would appreciate it if you could direct me to someone.»
The company already has data about you, so a second chance may be faster and more successful.
Be available
Often candidates miss out on a chance because they delay responding. If someone writes to you, respond immediately. Even if you’re not 100% ready, say, «I can talk tomorrow» or even «I can call you today.»
In competition, it is not always the best who wins, but the most efficient.
Despite the cuts, hiring continues
Sarah emphasizes that the market is complex, but vacancies for specialists have not disappeared. «Now is the time to declare your niche. It is more difficult for generalists, but specialists in narrow areas remain in demand. It is a selective market, but it is definitely not dead.»
