Google will permanently disable goo.gl links: from August 25 they will start issuing 404
Google has officially confirmed that all shortened links in the goo.gl format will stop working starting August 25, 2025. Instead of content, users will see a 404 error. This is the final stage of the complete shutdown of Google URL Shortener, which the company warned about more than a year ago.
Google has officially confirmed that all shortened links in the goo.gl format will stop working starting August 25, 2025. Instead of content, users will see a 404 error. This is the final stage of the complete shutdown of Google URL Shortener, which the company warned about more than a year ago.
This is reported by TechRadar. Back in 2018, Google stopped creating new abbreviations due to changing ways of consuming content. And in 2019, the service was officially closed. At the same time, old goo.gl links remained active, until now. Since last year, some of them began to show warning screens about the termination of the action.
Developers who still use goo.gl for redirects or with social media metadata should be prepared for disruption. Alternatives have been around for a long time, with Google recommending switching to third-party services like bit.ly or ow.ly back in 2018.
Interestingly, some links from Google, such as Google Maps, will not be affected and will continue to work even after the general shutdown of goo.gl.
It was possible to temporarily bypass the warning screens by adding the si=1 parameter to the URL, but this will not save you from a complete shutdown anytime soon.
Google’s URL Shortener service lasted nine years, from 2009 to 2018. However, according to the company, 99% of goo.gl links had no activity by mid-2024. So the mass impact of their deactivation is likely to be minimal.
As a reminder, we also published an article about how a new feature has appeared in the Google Photos app that allows you to «bring photos to life.» Artificial intelligence turns static images into short six-second videos with natural movements.
