Google’s flagship AI Overviews feature, which generates answers based on artificial intelligence, has been misleading users in recent days by confusing calendar years. As TechCrunch reports, when asked a simple question: “What year is it?” the algorithm repeatedly replied: “It’s 2024,” even though it was actually 2025.

Even after several page updates, the answer remained incorrect. It was only on the evening of May 30 that Google officially fixed the glitch. The company did not explain the reason for the error, but noted that they use such incidents to improve their systems.
“As with all search features, we are constantly improving our algorithms. Most AI Overviews provide accurate and useful information, and we are actively working on updates to avoid similar situations,” a Google spokesperson commented.
This isn't the first time AI Overviews has given wrong advice. Previously, the system recommended eating a small rock a day as a source of minerals, or adding glue to pizza to help the cheese stick better. In the version for the Indian market, where the feature was launched in Hindi, its answers were often contradictory or unclear.
Despite such incidents, the company is actively promoting AI Overviews: according to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, the feature is already used by more than 1.5 billion people in more than 100 countries. In regions such as the US and India, it generates more than 10% of search queries.
The AI Overviews feature is part of Google’s ambitious drive to integrate artificial intelligence into its core services. Instead of a classic list of links, users are increasingly seeing a summary answer generated by the Gemini model. However, frequent errors cast doubt on the readiness of AI to replace traditional search, especially when it comes to basic factual information.
It was previously announced that the AI Overviews extension in Google Search is becoming available in over 200 countries and over 40 languages, including Ukraine.
