Google has officially brought its Gemini conversational AI to Google TV: first, support was provided to TCL QM9K series models, but support will be expanded throughout the year.
The release is reported by Engadget. Gemini on TVs is launched by saying «Hey, Google» or by pressing the microphone button on the remote control and, unlike the classic Google Assistant, supports free conversation based on the context of subsequent questions.
The assistant works as a personal viewing editor: say «Give us some advice: I like dramas, and she likes light comedies,» and Gemini will put together a selection to suit your tastes. It can also show reviews of the title you want, find «that new medical series,» or remind you of the highlights of the last season in a minute.
The possibilities are not limited to movies. In a demo at CES, the assistant responded to the request «explain the Solar System to a third-grader» and immediately pulled up thematic videos from YouTube. Similarly, you can ask about recipes or educational topics — after the first answer, clarify and move deeper.
Support is starting on a limited number of devices, but Google will eventually roll out Gemini to its own Google TV Streamer, Walmart’s onn 4K Pro media player, some Hisense, and new TCL TVs. The company also promises to expand features: deeper integrations with recommendations, smart tips for family profiles, and better interactions with the Google ecosystem in the living room.
For the user, this is a transition from «command search» to a dialogue with the TV: the system remembers preferences and adjusts the output to the situation — from family evening to a quick educational request for a child. All you need is a microphone on the remote and the Internet.
Google showed off the idea of integrating Gemini into TVs at CES 2025. Previously, Google TV relied on Assistant to execute short commands. Gemini brings longer dialogues, personalized recommendations, contextual responses, and a selection of relevant videos from YouTube.
